Concept by Chiyu
I'm pretty sure almost everyone is familiar with this concept already (after all, I've been hosting levels like this since 2000/2001, and it's STILL a frequently hosted gamemode), but I'll briefly explain it anyway.
Survivor levels have to be hosted in treasure. The host (or whoever wants to control the game) has to go to a seperate room, from which he will operate to start the game once there are enough players.
The point is to stay in the arena as long as possible. Most levels have some added things to make this hard; such as destructable blocks/ground, self-exploding TNT's/bombs, lasers and events like winds, belts, suckertubes etc.
If they're not falling by themselves, you have to "fight" your opponents off. You can push them, but you can also shoot them with various ammo. In contrast to CTF, freezer/frostbiter/gun3 is very useful in this, since you can freeze your enemies while they are in mid-air, thus making them fall down.
There are two well-known spin-offs of the concept Survivor. A few months after the release of the first Survivor levels, ET came up with a nice twist for this concept, and he asked me if he was allowed to use this idea combined with my original concept to create Ground Force. ET's idea was to have turtle shells and exploding crates falling down when a player stomps a trigger crate. Ground Force became very popular as well.
The emphasis in GF is on staying in the arena while it's automatically being teared apart, while the emphasis in normal survivor is on battling your opponents.
The second popular spin-off is called Airboard Survivor, and was worked out by Vegito and me in early 2004, with help from Ragnarok and Pyromanus to make the system work perfectly. You're on an airboard and although there is no default "pit" as with the survivor/GF levels, there are plenty of sucker tubes (or no fly zones in combination with warps), and if you touch them, you're out.
Air Survivor is slightly harder because getting shot while flying has a bigger effect, every well aimed shot could be your last one! Note that you can also play Water Survivor instead of Air Survivor, but it basically works the same way.
I remastered my 9 original Survivor levels, by giving them a better system, so it's easier to see who is out etc.
